Background

Several of China's leading energy storage equipment manufacturers commissioned us to export containerized lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) classified under UN3536. The cargo originated from multiple inland cities across China and needed to reach numerous door locations across inland Europe via river-sea intermodal transport to European base ports, then onward road transport.

The shipment presented a convergence of industry-wide pain points: oversized and overweight containers requiring specialized handling, complex dangerous goods maritime declaration procedures, stringent port filing requirements, and tight peak-season container and vessel space availability. A single documentation error could mean a container held at port for weeks.

Our Solution

1. UN3536 Dangerous Goods Specialized Compliance Service

We provided a complete compliance chain from packaging inspection and Dangerous Goods Packaging Certificate (危包证) processing through to one-stop maritime declaration and port filing, helping clients navigate complex DG regulatory requirements smoothly.

  • 7-document package prepared per shipment: MSDS, DG Packaging Certificate, Maritime DG Declaration, Port Filing Approval, Packing List, Commercial Invoice, and Transport Contract.
  • Pre-audit of all documents by our in-house DG specialist before submission to authorities, performing cross-checks on UN number, proper shipping name, and packaging group for consistency across all documents, which is the most common point of error.
  • Accelerated DG packaging certificate processing through experienced channels.

2. Customized Multimodal Transport Plan

For inland-origin cargo, we designed an optimal "inland transport + river-sea intermodal + European inland delivery" routing for each factory location, achieving true door-to-door closed-loop delivery.

  • Inland collection: Truck or barge from factory to major Chinese port (Shanghai/Qingdao/Tianjin), depending on the factory's location and cargo dimensions.
  • Ocean freight: Priority space on Europe mainline services through partnerships with major container carriers (MSK, HPL, MSC, COSCO, HMM, OOCL, EMC, YML, CMA CGM), helping secure space even during peak season when DG allocations are tight.
  • European inland: From major base ports (Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp) to final door locations across Germany, Netherlands, Poland, France, and Italy. Our European partner network covers all major industrial regions.

3. Oversized & Overweight Container Specialized Handling

These are not standard containers. Energy storage units can exceed standard weight and dimension limits. Our engineering team produces lifting plans, lashing and securing schemes, and matches specialized containers and handling equipment to each unit's specifications.

  • Custom-designed spreader beams and lifting frames for units with non-standard lifting points.
  • Custom lashing plans with certified securing materials, each plan reviewed and signed off by a qualified engineer for insurance compliance.
  • Reinforced flat rack and platform containers when standard containers are unsuitable.

4. Stable Space Guarantee System

Through partnerships with major container lines, we secure priority space allocation on Europe mainline routes. During peak season, when DG space is often the first to be cut, advance booking and multi-carrier relationships help keep shipments on schedule.

5. End-to-End Visibility Tracking

Cargo milestones synchronized in real time. Full-chain traceability for dangerous goods transport. Early warning alerts for any exceptions, before they become problems. Customers received daily status updates throughout the transit.
